OEM = original equipment manufacturer

In terms of computer hardware, OEM is usually unbranded in an unmarked box. OEM software is also minimalist in supply and comes as a basic package.

OEM versions of Windows can only be activated on one PC and not moved; if the PC needs a new motherboard due to hardware failure, then another copy of software would be required. Retail versions of Windows do not have this limitation but are more expensive to buy. Windows7 retail also comes with both 32bit and 64bit versions to be chosen upon install, Windows7 OEM is 32 or 64 bit specific upon purchase.
