Remote Control

Compro K300

There are an endless number of ways to control your Media Center from a distance, the most popular being IR controllers that have a USB receiver plugged into the HTPC. For Windows Media Center, it helps if the remote also has a 'Green Button' to instigate the Media Center interface and home screen.

Some IR remotes are:

  1. Compro K300
  2. Microsoft's own official remote

Taking it up a step from IR comes RF controllers that require no line of sight and can work through walls. The benefits of these is that the receiver can be hidden away (even just plugged into the back of the HTPC) and it creates a cleaner looking install.

Some RF remotes are:

  1. Gyration Media Center remote - this also has mouse control

Keyboard / Mouse controls

Microsoft keyboard

Clearly not as discrete as a standard remote control, but will offer full functionality of any software.

Some Media Center keyboards:

  1. Microsoft's Media Center keyboard

Game controllers

For Windows Media Center, there is the option to use a games controller using the MCEJoy software from Spesoft.

And for those who are Wii fans, you can also hack together your own sensorbar to use a Wii remote on Windows Media Center. Read about it here.
