Anyone here ever used Knoppix? I used it a couple of years back to get access to my hard drive that was refusing to boot into Windows.

It's a Linux based bootable OS on a CD, which if your PC ever gets screwed you can load and it creates a very usable Operating System in your RAM without touching your hard disk, from there you can access you hard drive and fix/copy any files you may need to a removable one. It's an ISO file you download then burn to CD/DVD.

I first used it a couple of years back when my hard disk failed (back in the day when I had one PC with one drive) and it wouldn't boot into Windows, so a bit of searching I came across Knoppix and the version I used back then was pretty good; Firefox browser etc.

I see from the Knoppix site that the latest version has more included software and so if anyone fancies dipping their toe into the world of Linux, there's your option! More here.

There's also this version called KnoppMyth that includes the MythTV Media Center software, but from what I read, it's not quite plug n' play as Microsoft's version.
I've used ubuntu before to get into a hard drive that the os had screwed.
I basically ran it off a live iso file from a usb stick.

I like the idea of putting a linux on an old laptop I have, so I could make it as a music server.

Might look into knoppix
Another good one for Older Laptops if Linux Mint, had that one installed on an old MaxDATA Vision470T 512Mb Ram and 6 gig Hdd it was faster than the original Wndows XP install.

Light weight installs e.g. Xubuntu, same as Ubuntu but the window manager is replaced with XFCE.

I've used Linux on and off since Redhat 5.0 days so it's just a case of finding the right one for you, and how were spoilt for choice, my personal fave is Ubuntu 9.04. Best of all most are available as Live CD or DVD now so you can try without installing.

One thing I do know is that I and a lot of my friends who's machine i've put right when windows installs bit the bullet, are glad for the multi tool linux boot and repair disk.

Hey there and welcome! (nice avatar btw)

Sounds like you're our Linux man then Wink

I'd like to try out a few more Linux things just to get a better feel for it so I'll no doubt have a few questions in time...
Hi and thanks for the welcome, should have done that introductions thing :)

Main rig at the minute is a Win7 box Dual booting Ubuntu 9.04 the dual booting contolled by Grub rather than windows.

At the moment I'm working on a twin screen experiment, dual head nvidia main screen regular 15" (Eventual TV HDMI) secondary is a 7" tousch screen liliput style, only problem to work out in linux is need to rotate the xy motion 90 degrees right.

Then can setup two screen entries in xwindows, then I can get same functionality ala iMon/iMedian HD.

Where as iMon/iMedian HD uses a program to redirect the control panel to the 7" and media to main panel, xwindows handles it internally as "Viewport" I believe spawning a separate display server for each entry in the config.

Should prove to be an interesting project, as I may have to recompile the kernel modules.

Bye for now
Andy
Crickey! You sound like a man with a project on the go. So the end result is a dual boot HTPC with seperate touch screen control panel, right?

A bit like this, but less pimpy.
Not as Big, got something similar to this from these guys a a while back, for the control panel.

Then I was thinking about one of these Either Zotac or Inno3d Atom ION 330 with wirels N in a compact box streamin content from my main storage.

Would go for a board that had either pci or pci-e then I cound utilise a cheap vga card to drive the control panel, and leave the onboard HDMI for the TV.

The 7" panel could then be mounted using hidden cable on shelf/wall or even incororated into a book/cd/dvd wall case

Thats the eventual set up as the main rig is for transcoding and devel, next to my mailserver/mass storage.

I am currently streamin over Wireless N to and Xbox and a Cyclone MKV Enclosure, sharing tinternet with tv, and blu-ray too.

SKY-HD and Blu-ray to tv's onboard HDMI ports the rest through a 5way HDMI Switcher, Unfortunately no AV AMP though, amking do with TV sqeekers.

I'll start a separate thread in Linux section for the 7" tft as it will eventually be running XBMC morethan likely if not some form of *nix box, when i've got a bit further.

TTFN
Andy
