I've just started to look into extenders. I currently have a PC set up in my bedroom which runs as a gaming rig but also a media centre. I currently don't use to for TV but I do have a TV card installed so could use it to record programs if I wanted to. So at the minute it is used for music, photos and ripped DVDs.
It's now after having this set up for a while, that I'm wanting to make more use of it, and to do that will involve having access to the machine from my TV downstairs. Original plan was to simply run a HDMI cable from the machine to the TV downstairs and make use of it that way, but frankly I don't like the idea of trailing all those cables round the house. So the idea of the extender appeared. If I got a Xbox 360 would I be able to stream my music, movies and photos to the tv downstairs ? I am willing to change from wireless to the option of running through those plugs you can buy if necessary for the video streaming, but first I'm just making sure this is entirely possible ?

but I'm sure if you have any more questions someone else who runs one as an extender will answer.
