It's a positive thing! Kind of like a global thanks for a member, but it can also be nagative (hopefully never though :-/).

I was demoing the feature and as you're one of the most active members, you became my guinea pig!

I worked it out thanks. I never noticed it before.
Honour yea I get it ta, love it when people point out spelling mistakes, makes me work on my disssslecsia (ohh how do you spell it) even more so.

Apart from the 'thanks' that can be given for certain posts, the reputation is like the eBay reputation score; users can give positive or negative scores of 1 or 2 to one another giving an overall opinion on the user.
