intel atoms
Is there anyone out there that is running an atom type htpc?

I'm looking to buy an intel atom cpu for my next htpc and would love to run it with out a graphics card, so the onboard graphics will have to deal with blu ray capabilitys.

If paired with a SSD it could be virtually silent.
All Im looking for it to do is play SD and HD videos within media center, the information would be on a home server.

I know you could buy a better system for the price, but this would be cheaper to run long term because of power requirements and a small form factor to hide.

Thought this one would be good

RE: intel atoms
Hmmm, never thought to look at atom before. I know of a user on another site far, far away that uses an atom for his HTPC. Hopefully he may come by this way and fill you in...

My new mobo for the kitchen will be running with on-board graphics. It has the 785G chipset with ATi 4200 graphics that apparently are quite good. However the retail heatsink that has come with my Athlon 420 looks like a toy, I think I may need to purchase an upgrade before the weekend.

RE: intel atoms
Ive had bad experiences with onboard video in the past.
Bought a matx asus mobo that was ment to be capable of delivering blu ray play back, but the reality was that it shuddered when playing DVD's.
Hope you can get your aquaintence to come over some time, I think atom is the way to go networked to a good server.

Yeah, onboard graphics have never lived up to their hype. The nVidia 6150 on my current kitchen PC is a bit of a dog. The 4200 that I have on my new mobo it supposed to be good.

Worst case if not is I have to splash out another £25 on a HD4350.

RE: intel atoms
I've got a Asrock 330. I've been running XBMC live from the HDD until I gave Windows 7 a go on it. It's a bit slugish in Windows but a Memory upgrade and faster HDD would help.

I bought coreavc and it plays 1080P rips with no problems.

It's going to be moved into the bedroom when I build a better HTPC for the living room.

Your Asrock looks interesting, and have I been living under a rock for the past few years, XBMC? Just Wiki'd it and it looks good :)

I can see a new section in the forum coming up... Now you'll have to start a thread with some opinions/screenshots Biggrin

RE: intel atoms
I used to have XBMC(was XBMP) on my xbox 1 for years. It used to play any file you chucked at it until High def cam out.

It has VDPAU built in to do all the decoding on the graphics card. Trying to tweak it can be a pain but it's free!
