disassembley of server
I've lived with my server for a few months now and have taken the decision to disassemble the server in the loft.
The main reason is all the little problems I always get, never the same problem too, which means that I'm forever chasing down a new problem. At the end of the day I'm only really accessing the main lounge htpc with it and I don't see the point, at the moment, to have two computers running at the same time. If I had a true thin client running I guess I would see the point, but Win 7 makes it so easy now to have home groups and sharing to take place. I'm just not a server lover any more So It's going to be one pc with loads of storage room, video card, dual dvb cards and extra quite cooling to sit in the lounge with us. All accessed with media center and easy for the missus to access any time she wants with out hassle. Now I've got the hours it takes to take a hard drive off the system and transfer it one by one. See you in a week "Do or do not. There is no try." Yoda |

Yeah absolutely no point in over-complicating the issue of computers in the home. I started with my lounge PC and that was the only one I had for the first year, stuffed full of internal and external drives. Adapting the home over time and adding more PCs gave me no option but to have a server, however I would always avoid having one unless necessary. At least you've learnt what you do/don't need in your house. elootos - mediacenterhouse.com This forum has no strict rules, just those I make up as I go along! |

RE: disassembley of server
Have to agree, I'm not a great fan of the server either, however I'm trying to use it as little as possible till the next WHS comes out later this year.
The thing I like about the server though is its also easy to back up stuff from my work computer and work laptop. |

RE: disassembley of server
Ahh, don't tempt me!!!!!
I love the idea of WHS, but frankly, it just doesn't cut it really. Getting my Linux server running at work has made me realise how f'ing annoying WHS is (well, Windows in general frankly). And this past month it's randomly started throttling network traffic making Blu-ray ISOs stuttt-tt-tter. TBH, the lounge is the only place I watch any films and the server is only good for networked RecordedTV so I may just move all the drives back to the lounge PC and leave the 750Gb system drive in the server for TV, Photos and music. Hmmm, change is on the horizon... elootos - mediacenterhouse.com This forum has no strict rules, just those I make up as I go along! |

RE: disassembley of server
Right, that's it, the Home Server is officially on death row.
The bloody thing has started crawling to transfers of >1Mb/sec and no films will play properly. So I'm stuck on a Friday night wanting to watch a film and I bloody well can't as the server is shite. Reading online seems to suggest that the limitations of NTFS etc etc mean that WHS will never truly be as good as it should and when certain drives start to fill up it causes slow transfer rates. It really is a poorly conceived product and one that should not be promoted by Microsoft as being the solution to people's data storage. The only dillema I have now is do I keep the system but install a Ubuntu Server or do I just move all the drives back to the lounge PC? I think I'm gonna try for Ubuntu with the drives as JBOD. Hmmm, I'll see what I feel like when all the drives are removed from the server. EDIT: Just looked at the drives by booting with my trusty Ubuntu mem stick and it reports dodgy sectors on 3 of the drives with the SMART report. So WTF is Home Server saying all drives are healthy?! elootos - mediacenterhouse.com This forum has no strict rules, just those I make up as I go along! |
