adding movies to WMS...
Hi guys,

first of all, this site is awesome!! Clap been following a lot of threads on AVforums, but the builds documented here are truly outstanding!

how are you guys adding movies to your home servers, i've got one built and intend on using it purely for Media.

but how are you guys ripping onto the the WMS??

i was going to add a Blu-ray drive into the WMS, but was wondering if you guys are just adding to the WMS via the PC's around the house??

how long is it taking to rip a blu-ray??

cheers

Mike

Hello, thanks, and welcome Wave

The Installs section can only grow in time so here's to even more great installs appearing Thumb

I thought about running a Blu-ray drive on my server, but given that it's in the attic I thought otherwise!

The Home Server version of My Movies does have a background service that automates the ripping of films when inserted into the server, but I prefer to rip them on a local PC (my kitchen one) across to the server instead. If you install My Movies on your local PC as a client version (i.e. one that reads a database off the server), then it's automatically updated throughout the home as soon as the film is added to the watched folder anyway.

So my method is:

- My Movies Home Server install, then My Movies client install across all Media Centers.

- Set My Movies Home Server to monitor 'Video' folder on server

- rip films from Kitchen PC across to server's 'video' folder using anydvdhd.

I also run Lights Out on the home server so it wakes in sync with the Media Centers throughout the house as well.

Hi mike.
Lights out is a fantastic little add on for WHS.
If you check out the add on part of WHS thread in this forum, it will show you basically what is what and where from.
Hopefully it should stop your server being on 24/7.

Just read your other post, looks like you have a full project in mind. Hope we see you on here often.

yes mate definitely in for the long haul! Biggrin

i am still building everything up at the moment, but learning so much along the way also which is always good.
I think everything will come together and i'll have a better understanding as i install the software and actually start using it.

My biggest problem, is that i am still living at home, where the internet connection is down stairs, and the WIFI signal is too low for upstairs, where my room is.
At the moment i have a network switch, off which a SiteCom range extender is attached. This of course isn't ideal because it now creates 2 wireless fields with different names, so i think i'm gonna have to buy a new router to get everything working together??

unless there is another way around this??

Thanks guys Thumbsup

I have the same issue at work with an extender that overlaps the wireless zone which is annoying. The alternatives are to upgrade to 801.11n wifi which is stronger, but require a ~£50 router upgrade and compatable hardware on your computers as well. This is what I sorted my mum out with who has her laptop the other side of the house from the router and a 6ft thick brick chimney breast inbetween. 802.11n sorted out the signal completely. Or you can use Homeplugs that send ethernet over your power sockets throughout the house. Ebuyer do a cheap pair for about £30 and the benefit is you can take them with you. I suppose you could also take a new router with you as well if you keep your parents current one to swap back when you move out.

RE: adding movies to WMS...
I bought a wireless n router (belkin) Cost me around a £100 including the dongle.
I don't use wireless n on my laptop to the router, just G as I tend only use my laptop for Internet.
I found the signal stronger than my previous G router , I get about 10m more range.
I dare say it feels more responsive, but I think that's wishful thinking. More likely to be that my broadband provider gave me an extra 6mbs, it's actualy 12mbs now.
So its probably better components and a better ariel.

RE: adding movies to WMS...
I think part of it is the fact that i have the standard Sky netgear router which probably isnt the best Sad

there are a few routers out there, but some only work with certain inputs. is this correct?

northan: is this the type of thing you have??

RE: adding movies to WMS...
yep spot on.
I bought that one because it allowed me to connect my external usb hard drive to it so it acts as a network attached storage (NAS) accessible to everyone on the network.
Its come down in price, I notice Curry's still want a pretty penny for it.

I found it easy to setup and has always been stable, what more can you ask for? (probably going to be some wise arse out there that will answer that question and show me the error of my ways with my choice of router Nahnahna)
I've just been informed you should run look into a wirless N1, or one with dual band.
I'm still really unsure what is the best.

RE: adding movies to WMS...
I have a D Link Dir 855 dual band which works great. I can have 2 SSID's, one on the 2.5ghz and the other on the 5.0ghz. I also had an extender which I no longer require as the whole house is Cat 6'd :)
The good thing with the dual band is you can keep the 2 broadcasts separate which helps when you connect any old b or g devices, this brings down the connection of whole n network to the slowes device speed. So I have SSID 2.5 and SSID 5.0..... happy days!
