Well the first I can think of is XBMC that came off the back of the xbox. Then theres Media Portal, but as powerful as it is, it can also require a lot of configuration so wouldn't be as reliable as Microsoft Media Center. elootos - mediacenterhouse.com This forum has no strict rules, just those I make up as I go along! |

Please can someone find another MC that does support it? or is that just being picky? |

Mythtv can do much the same as windows 7 mc. Trouble is its a right pain to setup and maintain. Best left to the linux guys

Best left to the linux guys I agree, i attempted to set MythTV up only to find it was way too complex & to get the best from it you need a Server & clients running Myth. Similar to WHS & Win 7 networks i see most of you have. Only its unix & i hate fannying with the command prompt!!

Thanks for the good brief explanation, I had a quick look at it today on the PVR Comparison chart on Wikipedia (I want something like that on this site's Wiki!) and see that it offers all that a Media Center system could ever give making it probably the most powerful solution, but without the easy usability and full Windows support which is a real shame. Like you say, it's one solely for the power-users. elootos - mediacenterhouse.com This forum has no strict rules, just those I make up as I go along! |

RE: What's the best open source Media Center equivalent and why
XBMC was the first media progy I ever used and will always have a soft spot for it.
My old Xbox sits under my parents TV running a recent build. My mum loves taking photos, and in her 70s I`ve taught her how to ftp stuff onto the box so she can view her work on the big screen. |
