WHS not showing Hard Drives
righty then,

I installed WHS on my machine today, all well and good, so decided to add one of my Samsung HD103SI 1TB drives.

The Drive is added via sata raid expansion card, which shows in the BIOS boot screen, but not in the console or anywhere in the system.

I've tried a spare Barracuda 160 GB sata drive i have kicking about through the same card, and everything runs perfectly.

any ideas where or why its going t*ts up??

cheers
Mike

RE: WHS not showing Hard Drives
This is starting to get my back up now Wah

i can't boot into the bios through F2, possibly because i have a USB keyboard and not a PS2 connection type.

When the 1 TB drive is added, WHS takes an age to load up, only for it not to be found anywhere. Should i try and reinstall onto the 1TB drive to begin with?? Sad

RE: WHS not showing Hard Drives
I'd install WHS on the largest drive you have, simply because it's the one drive you can't upgrade. The next edition WHS, Vail, allows you to remove the system drive as storage.

Is there anything on the 1Tb drive already? Does it work in other systems or directly on the mobos sata? You can get IDE to sata adaptors as well allowing 4 drives on the 2 legacy connectors. Perhaps try that.

Is there a 'Function key' toggle on your keyboard? Some keyboards have them working as other keys unless you enable them as F keys.

This are pitfalls of using an older mobo for WHS. I bit the bullet on £90 worth of cpu and new mobo to rid the hassle of limited connectors etc. Everything is onboard making it a cleaner install as well. Just make sure it has goos XP driver support!

RE: WHS not showing Hard Drives
It's been along time since I had WHS woes. I've almost forgot the tears, so I feel for you man.
Right to start with you should always if you can have the Ps2 connections for keyboard and mouse because the o/s its written on is so old it doesn'tt have the usb driversnativelyy supported.

You should always try to install WHS on the largest HD you have, because once it's in you can't change it, so it figures to have the best storage you can get.
How many sata ports do you have and how many HD are you trying to install?
I think elootos, from experience has had problems with sata raid cards, so he might be able to help on that.

You need the raid settings in bios set up correctly at the beginning. I found that (specially with asus) certain boards can be really fussy if you get this wrong and in turn WHS won't work.
As I said before it's an archaic based os system full of niggling problems so be prepared to reinstall a few times. That's why elootos said to wait till the last possible minute to register.

I hope it helps, it's hard to know whats going on in the world of WHS sometimes

RE: WHS not showing Hard Drives
I've got 2 x 1TB samsung Eco drives http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164282

I've got no physical Sata connections on the mobo, but two on the raid card.

I just picked up a supercheap PS2 connection-ed keyboard from tesco, but still cant get into the BIOS for some reason, even holding down F2, it just boots to the raid card and then straight to the WHS loading screen Sad

i cant really see any point in throwing money a adapters if the inevitable outcome is buying a new mobo anyway.

what motherboards and chips are you guys both running?? ( ihave read it somewhere, but cant seem to find it now Sad)

I like the way WHS shows the health status of the drives aswel, so it would be nice to have those accross all of the drives i have/will have. so maybe a new mobo and chipset it is..... payday friday Biggrin

I hope the stuff i've already bought (fan and RAM) will be compatible, everything is pretty generic right??........ give me a car to work on any day of the week! Tongue

I've just glad i'm hitting these issues now really, and glad i took your advice in not entering the product key :)

Thanks again guys, help much appreciated! Thumbsup

RE: WHS not showing Hard Drives
That looks sweet.
Elootos managed, I think, to pick up a mobo with 6 sata ports. v cheap.
Very usefull if your ever going to expand.
Samsung drives are great although I would have spent a few extra quid
on the F3. I have all 3 types F1, 2 and 3 and the 3 is phenonamal.
Blistering speeds.
Will the chips work together? Yep

Sorry I didn't reply to this earlier but I was away last week. The board I ended up with was an Asus M4A78-VM (AMD 780G chipset). It's running with a Sempron 140 cpu and works a treat. I think yours should be good through as well so let us know what happens.
