RE: Virus checker
Yeah, I think the AVG free version is just so they can snare you into paying for the full version, I don't think there's any harm in the free version.

However, I do pay for a SOHO license from them, costs about £50 for 2 years and covers multiple PCs (not that there's a strict limit though).

The one thing I would be careful with is their 'internet security' package, it contains a bit too much protection for my liking and that can ultimately have adverse affects on a PCs performance. Unless you actively try and browse dodgy hacking sites and download trojans then you're not really in that great a danger. My Lounge PC hasn't had a virus checker on it for about 3 months and installing one the other day it still came up clean as a whistle (but other than YouTube and iPlayer it doesn't do much else). When installing any of their software you can select the 'custom' mode and untick all options other than the Virus checker bit. My parents installed the 'full' version and when I tried to help them with Windows Remote Assistance, AVG Security kept blocking it - not very handy!

Above all, the internet and the files you use need common sense applied. Sensible browsing = a safe PC

But if temptation were to get to you and you really wanted to see what the darker side of the internet contains, I'd go to an internet cafe or buy a cheapie laptop and keep it off my home network (and not use it for internet banking either!)
