Unraid server
After reading elootos post. It got me thinking so I decided to make my self a Unraid Server. Once I get it up and running I will upgrad the hard drives.

I am using a ok computer dont no all the spec

Motherboard
has a 3ghz cpu
2GB of ram
1x 260g sata hdd
2x 80g ide hdd

So I did what it says on the unraid sever installation page
I then put it in my sever and started it up.
First I get this screen

If I select "UnRAID OS"

I get this

I dont no what to do.

Is this all the files I should I on the usb drive

Also I have the "syslinux.exe" on the drive but I cant still it even when I click Show hidden files

RE: Unraid server
Any luck yet?

If you're seeing the unraid selection screen during boot then everything appears ok.

Have you remembered to name the actual stick 'UNRAID'? I made that mistake first time and got nowhere fast!

Apart from those instructions you linked to, there are many more options to choose from. Is your mem stick larger than 128MB in size?

Basically;
  • Format stick and call it UNRAID
  • run syslinux.exe from command prompt in Windows with details given on unRAID website
  • Copy all files as is from the unRAID zip download
  • pop in your server pc and boot making sure that the USB stick is the first bootable device

That's it. It appears you may have hit an unforseen stumbling block Help

Try the install onto the stick once more and see what happens.

unRAID was originally meant to be a completely invisible system with no options whatsoever so it's been designed to be as fool-proof as possible. Can't think what your issue may be?

I

Yeah i have tried it again still no luck.
I tried and reformated the usb drive from FAT 32 to FAT but still no luck.

The usb drive is 512mb so i think that should be ok.
Yeah i have named the usb drive "UNRAID"

I will try a different usb drive and a different computer to install unraid on to the usb drive. Will try it on a different os as well.
Will get back 2moro hopefully with good news.

Er, I've done a bit of Googling on this for you and it appears you may have a motherboard that unRAID (or Linux rather) doesn't like.

I'll quote from a thread about something other than unRAID (but based on Linux):

"I've read a few threads about this now and I think it has something to do with the bios not reporting the correct amount of ram and the Linux kernel being unable to allocate ram it does not know about.
To workaround this, you should specify the amount of ram your machine has to the kernel before you boot."

Where you go from here I don't know. All I can suggest is seeking help in the unRAID forum. There are a lot of newbies around there so don't get intimidated by being a first time user!

Or, have you tried the latest version5 beta? I'm running the version 4 release.

EDIT: unRAID has nothing to do with what OS you have on your drives; it boots itself outside of any information on any hard disk. It will run even with no hard drive in your PC even. All it needs is a motherboard, RAM and a USB slot.

Yeah i have tried the forum
no luck so far but i wont give up yet Angry

thanks elootos

Just tried version 5 and the same screenWah

What was the website that you found that info about my motherboard not liking unraid

I want to check if my other motherboard (MS 7046) likes unraid.

If so I will swop my media center with my unraid server so I can have both.

It wasn't about unraid, but rather about another piece of linux software. As they share the same core code, the error is the same. Getting out of it is another thing Unsure

For unRAID to be happy, it has to have a mobo that can boot happily from a USB stick with full hardware support. Perhaps your server mobo is just falls a little short.

You can try the unraid usb stick in your media center pc to see if it will boot ok. Don't go any further with setup though as it will delete your hard drive with Windows on it!

Only swap machines around if you have to, otherwise buy a newer cheap (£25) mobo for your server.

Hmm, I fear your server mobo is a touch old for the job. It reads as a 2004 model which in computing terms is ancient. There must be something in it that restricts what RAM is reported to the unRAID software at boot.

I strongly suggest you cease and turn back! unRAID is good, but not worth knackering computers for!

It is designed to work without any intervention, so if you can't get it working within 5mins then your hardware is just a little out of date.

So what you are saying I need to get a a cheap motherboard for my server Any ideas (I am not very good with hardware specs)

I will put my media computer back together when I get a min
