Samsung Galaxy S and Kies
If you are keen to upgrade to the latest 2.2 firmware, Froyo, but the Kies software doesn't see your phone, then you might be suffering from file extensions longer that 16 digits on the phone.

The phone's driver is part of Windows Media Player and kicks a fuss when presented with awkward file extensions e.g. some thumbnail files start with a full stop . and are long in length >16 digits. These files bugger up the driver installation and your phone won't connect.

A user over on xda-developers has created a tiny program that scans the phone for these erroneous files and lists them for you to delete.

You need to set the phone to connect as mass storage, then simply scan the memory cards that appear on your PC.

I had this problem and have now fixed it.

Updating to Froyo now...

RE: Samsung Galaxy S and Kies
Just updated to Froyo (2.2) on my SGS using the Kies software and there are some great improvements! Little tweaks here and there but lots of news functions and the whole Android experience feels like its had a complete overhaul.

Highly recommended!!

Yeah, theres lots of neat little features such as improved cursor location for copy/cut/paste of text, loads of new gmail functions, full voice control (that works!), built in task manager with cpu/ram displays, speed dial and sms shortcuts for the home screen, pinch to zoom out and see all home screens, more controls in the notification bar such as gps and auto-rotate on/off, push power button to hang up call (best one!), vibrate when person you're calling answers phone, the list goes on...

...blimey, lets not forget Flash support in the browser. The web now works 100%!

RE: Samsung Galaxy S and Kies
I have done my update and I think the SGS runs a lot better. It dosent seem to lag. I have only had the update for just over 24hrs and I think the battery life is better. The signal seems to be stonger. It was hard for me to get a signal at home but I have full signal all the time.

I like to new look about the icons inside to setting menu they seem nice and colorfully.

I probably haven seem all the updates yet but what I have seen they are good Thumbsup

I thought that as well about the battery life but wasn't sure if it was just me. I think they must have made the signal strength more intelligent as to whether it looks for a 2g or 3g signal; mine now locks constantly to the full strength 2g at home now rather that the 0-1 bar 3g. Thumbsup

The real show of its increased speed is by browsing the gallery, the 3D navigation is really quick as the photos load up. Don't know what they've done, but it's working well!

Roll on 2.3!

RE: Samsung Galaxy S and Kies
How you finding to update?

Mine was great when i first did it last weekend. but the last few days it seems to of gone realy slow and laggy when you go from page to page. I have a few app killers
  • Advanced Task Killer (This was great before I upgraded now just seems not to do much)
  • Advanced Task (Just got this today its killing 10+ tasks everytime)
  • Memory Booster Lite (This still works but not as good before i upgraded it was boosting memory upto 60% now its only about 50%)

I dont really have many apps on the phone. But the ones that I do I try and close them when I have finished with the app.

Is there a better app killer?

cheers

2.2 has its own task killer. Hold down the home button and the option comes up. You can then uninstall the others then.
