Remote Desktop
Hey all !

When I had Win 7 RC (Ultimate) I used Remote Desktop. The main reason being I could log into the pc downstairs that initially had the external HDD's with movies, music etc etc. This worked perfectly and really used RD to power down the pc downstairs

Now, I have Win 7 Home Prem edition. For some reason I can no longer use RD. I try to connect and doesn't work. RD is active on both media pc's and the laptop.

Setting up is straightforward and worked first time on the RC edition, but having issues this time around.

Any suggestions ?

There is no remote desktop functionality with W7 Home Premium however, try Live Mesh to link your PCs and it includes remote desktop.

Cheers Dunks, I'll give that a go and should help me do what I'm looking for (i.e. put the pc downstairs to sleep) when finished with it upstairs.

RE: Remote Desktop
I've just stuck Team Viewer on my laptop & they have a free iphone app too. I can't get over how easy & simple it is.

Also slapped it on my parents machine so when they phone & ask "How do we do that" i can remote in (even if i'm out) rather than waiting until i next go over or spending an hour trying to describe how to burn a cd!!

Team Viewer gets 5 * from me.Clap

I gotta say how bleedin' good TeamViewer is!!

I just tried it after unsuccessfully trying to connect to my dads PC with Remote Assistance for the past week (AVG Internet Security screwing things up) and bang, it worked straight away.

The download doesn't even require an install; it can run straight off as an .exe

If you install it however, it can sit in the system tray and be connected to from another remote PC running TeamViewer without any intervention, all you need is a (very) cryptic password. Genius.

Best of all it's free for personal use! Thumb

And would you believe it, there's even an iPhone app.

Hmmm, I feel a home-wide install coming up...

RE: Remote Desktop
OMFG! How good is TeamViewer?!? Thumbsup

Bloody brilliant is what it is. Installed it on my kitchen PC at home and from work I can login, control it (and Media Center as well) and even remote desktop through that PC to the server. No more missed recordings of Jeremy Kyle then Dry

Brilliant.

(screen grab of work pc desktop showing kitchen pc desktop with remote desktop through that to server.)

RE: Remote Desktop
This one is odd. I have Win7 32 bit (Home Premium) on this pc, and RDP is alive and well in "Accessories". I use it to connect to my WinXP Harmony automation PC and the Harmony CCTV pc. I'll check the Win7 64 bit (Home Premium) media pc....
Yup, it's there too ! I've just set up RDP connections to the two Harmony PC's.

Cheers for this 'Homie'. It wouldn't play ball with my pc's sadly, so had to shell out on Windows Ultimate.

As for Teamviewer, well this is fantastic too. I use it with the media pc and control it either with my iPhone or laptop whilst out in the garden. Has amazed a few people that have seen it. It's ease of selecting music to play for example. For the iPhone, I've only really used that to play music etc due to the screen size. Bit tricky to navigate round a small screen.

Just about to set my brother up with a new Scaleo E home built pc which will be completed next week and will pop this on and if he has any issues, I can log into his pc via TeamViewer. Magic ! Oh and it's free. Thumb

Still not managed to sort out my "server" as it won't go to sleep the bloody thing even though everything is enabled. So I log on remotely and close it down some evenings (no keyboard, mouse & monitor connected to it). Espec as it's so warm at the moment, but SpeedFan hasn't uncovered any major temperature issues yet.

RE: Remote Desktop
Greetings

I've been reading this thread with great interest. I've used TeamViewer5 a number of times. One of the things that sticks in my memory is that a password is generated on one side or both and this must be entered by one side or both.

As all of you, I too am interested in a solution for remotely accessing data from the road.

So how exactly does it work if your home system is sitting there all by its lonesome? Do you start teamviewer before you leave home and just leave it there running? How does the login work? Is there no risk to doing this?

Thanks. GL
