Network speeds

I know we have covered some topic surounding abtainable network speeds with certain network cards but Im still confused.

Im loading some films from my server to my laptop because Im going away for a week with work.

I chose 4, 6gb films to transfer to laptop. Laptop is connected via ethernet to router. Cat 5e cable runs from router to 100mbs network switch, then more cat 5e to server. The server only has 10/100 built in card on mobo.
So I was happy when I got 85 to 90mbs transfer speed over my network, then all the sudden it jumps to around 480mbs and holds there for 20mins (about the time it took to transfer all the films)

Now call me silly, but is that not gigabit speeds? If it is, why am I getting gigabit speeds with hardware that only supports 100mbs speeds?
Sometimes computers confuse the hell out of me, just when you get a grasp of a situation, it throws you a curve ball.
Anyway If I don't have a grasp of all of this, please enlighten me... For the sake of my sanity

Hmmm, you sound like you need a break from all this 'home media' stuff!

On a GbE network with average desktop drives, 24Gb of files would take about 7minutes to transfer. You're saying it was about 25minutes so that gives a transfer rate of about 16Mb/sec. Give or take a few minutes or a few Gigabytes and you have Megabit transfer speeds. Sounds like it should to me!

What does the network section say in Task Manager? Does it say 'link Speed' 1Gbps?
