MakeMKV

MakeMKV
Well it seems only right to start a new thread focusing on MakeMKV.

Tried it today myself and got Cars on Blu-ray from the full feature of 38GB down to the main movie only at 26GB. Working on a mounted ISO off my server it created a new .mkv file in 10mins.

A one-click(ish) solution for ripping the main film off a Blu-ray disc. Also removes the encryption of the film a la AnyDVDHD, so negates the use of that I guess.

Down to what your library to consist of. Full ISO rips = AnyDVDHD, Main feature only = MakeMKV.

The media player TMT3 plays mkv files but doesn't see subtitle tracks or extra audio tracks, so the best for that AFAIK is the free VLC player. Had it for years on my laptop and tried it this morning on the main lounge PC and it works well.

Anyone else with any feedback on players etc?

RE: MakeMKV
Windows should identify the subtitles and play in Media Center rather than TMT. If they are present you should be able to select them.

RE: MakeMKV
I really struggle when it comes to subtitles and languages within any windows media player using mkvs.
If I have a file that is being funny I normally use VLC, I've found it works for everything I throw at it, with much more control at my finger tips than anything else I've played with. so thumbs up. Thumbsup
I would like my movies to use VLC as my native player when I'm in media center. Is there a way? (free)

BTW dunks, you ok
BTW dunks, you ok

Ohh sorry mate Wink
P.s
When I get the blu ray drive for my computer this week, it will come with power DVD. Will that be ok to start with?
I think I will use MKV to start with ripping the films, but I need to know that there won't be any encryption problems.
I'm buying watchmen tonight as my first blu ray film. I thought it would be a good film to showcase blu ray to it's best.

Yea Yea Im excited Hyper

Well up until tonight, I've always used Power DVD 9 and AnyDVD to rip the Blu-Ray discs. I keep the copy protection on and leave AnyDVD to do it's thing. I'm now giving TMT3 a try and currently ripping my copy of The Dark Knight with MKV so if everything is ok, I'll report back. I think I will still use AnyDVD as I paid for 12mths and have about 4 months left, so tonight is a trial and will come back to MKV next year once the licence for AnyDVD expires.

Keep us all updated Northan.

Edit - Just re-read Elootos' post and will prob run the two together until I copy over the Blu Rays again via MKS and removing the need for ISO's and thus freeing up a bit of space to maybe cram another film in there.

PowerDVD does the job but is a last resort really. Although if playing only MKV files then it may be fine; my experience is down to Blu-ray rips. TMT3 is a better player for mounted ISO files.

Watchmen is good, if a little long and drawn out. Stylish though Cool

MKV doesn't like my mounted ISO files in Virtual Clonedrive; whinges about AnyDVD and when I disable that it throws up errors. Need to look into it some more.

I think that for the 'keepers' on hard disk I shall create MKVs, but for the new films I might stick to ISOs as I know they work without problems.

Once MakeMKV has proved itself I may change my method.

Right got film and bluray drive today.
Makemkv wouldn't recongnise the disc without powerdvd installed.
Dvdfab (bluray version) did recongnise it without powerdvd as it's built in.

Both ripped the film around the same time.

Obviously Makemkv only rips to mkv and Dvdfab only rips to the native file structure (unless the extra convert system is bought)
DVDfab has the option to rip main movie too as well as compress to smaller size along with converting the audio to lower format if necessary

Price: both have 30 day trial,
Makemkv is £52 for lifetime
Dvdfab ranges from £36 for a year licence to £65 lifetime licence.
20% discount available atm
I've not checked out anydvd yet.

I'm undecide which way to go yet, if I were to go Dvdfab I could use a program like handbreak to convert which is free.
I've found vlc player the best player so far

RE: MakeMKV
Ohh, decisions decisions...

It sounds like a 50/50 split between the two.

I personally would favor MakeMKV over DVDFab. At least then you get one file per film that is easy to manage. Nothing against DVDFab, still got it installed but never use it anymore.

Been using MakeMKV to rip some Blu-rays as a test and the files play fine on TotalMedia Theatre, albeit a little sluggish when skipping around. And it doesn't like ripping from a mounted ISO very much.

I think I will stick with ISOs from Anydvd and once watched, if it one I want to keep on the server then I will convert it to MKV. I always keep Pixar films for example and MKVing them saves 10 - 15Gb per film.

RE: MakeMKV
I've been enjoying MakeMKV. Like previously mentioned it doesnt seem to work with subs, so I've been ripping them from bluray's manually.

As I don't tend to watch any of the extra features other than the main film using MakeMKV over AnyDVD HD to rip the feature film out saves a lot of space rather than having the whole disc as an .iso.
I do think I will be buying a life time license sometime soon for it.

RE: MakeMKV
I've stopped using AnyDVD HD and gone over to DVDFab mainly because I can easily rip just the main film and choose which soundtrack and subtitles I want to keep. I've just finished ripping the main movie out of my collection and have nearly doubled the amount of films I can store on a 1tb hdd.

I've still kept my rips in the iso format as when I tried the iso to mkv option I couldn't get the mkv to play back in 7mc via the tmt3 plugin despite the stand alone player having no playback problems.

So how do you guys intend to play back your mkvs? I did download a codec pack to get mkv's to play in 7mc but never worked out how to get it to work. So I just kept to iso's.

Elootos, I don't know what issues you've had with dvdfab before but I didn't get any problems with the films in my collection. It's a shame slysoft haven't pulled their finger out and developed a HD version of clone DVD. it's been a fair while now since blurays have been out.
