How to rip sections of a Blu-ray/DVD

Information How to rip sections of a Blu-ray/DVD
Apart from using AnyDVD to rip a DVD/Blu-ray to hard disk as explained here, you can easily go that bit further and rip only selected sections of the disc, be it the main movie, or an extra, or even the studio intro sequence.

For this all you need is DVDFab, and to make it better, there's a free version to do all this here. Update Oct '10: Alternatively there is MakeMKV, this has a 30 day trial and is purchased after that time. Comes down to personal preference as to which you use, but I would prefer MakeMKV myself.

Once DVDFab or MakeMKV is installed and you've a film in your drive, you can then select the 'Main Movie' section on the left hand side and this breaks down all the content on the disc for you.

You then simply select each element that you want in your rip, including the video, audio and/or subtitle. It would be normal for the main feature to be the longest section on the disc, but clicking on each element previews the section in the small video window in the bottom left corner.

Any element with an [Image: dvdfabarrow.jpg] next to it indicates a default play element, i.e. it will play by default when watching the rip.

If wanting these rips to appear in something like Media Browser library as described here, please be aware that DVDFab places its rips into a 'MainMovie' folder, so you may want to pull them out of this into your 'DVD' folder once done. MakeMKV creates .MKV files (obviously) and these are media containers of the original disc information, i.e. they can contain any types of media information; video, audio tracks, subtiles etc.

I suppose the next question is, 'how can I do this for Blu-ray?', and the answer is that at the moment you can't, well not easily anyway.

DVDs are a lot simpler to handle and remanage than the overly complex and secure Blu-ray structure as intended by Sony. It will happen in time though...

Has anyone used this?

Last time I tried, it hadn't cracked the Blu-ray element ripping just yet.

I went through a period of using TS Remux to extract the feature from the Blu-ray disc but it got fiddly as film houses started to spread the feature about making it like a freaking jigsaw puzzle.

Haven't tried looking for an alternative just yet as I increased my drive space instead Thumb

Actually, I think this may be what you are looking for. Basically a program called Clown BD.

RE: How to rip sections of a Blu-ray/DVD
UPDATE: Added MakeMKV as a alternative to DVDFab and also added the fact that both these software can rip sections of Blu-rays, something that was previously very fiddly.
