House build
Hi Dunks,

The wife and I are constantly talking about moving house but one of the goals of mine is for a self-build.

I'd given myself a 10 year goal and that was now 3 years ago so time is ticking! Can I ask how long it took you from the start to moving in and also the costs of architects, legalities, red-tape etc (not including actual building costs).

Anything you'd do different with hindsight?

I did see one once where an older gent familiar with IT wired the entire house with what looked like several tonnes of CAT6 cabling for all manner of automation/control.

TBH, I wouldn't know where to draw the line on what I want to achieve, but the idea of planning it all would be good.

Need to brush up on my Sketchup skills first I think Thumb

Oh, the Grand Design last night looked interesting. Not watched it all yet but done with a sensible budget I thought.

RE: House build
The time between the plot going on the market and us walking into the house was a little over 3 years. The total time scale for us was:

2002 – We first mooted the idea of a self build.
2002-4 - A number of plots were viewed.
March 2004 – Placed an offer on the plot, this was accepted then took off the market due to drainage issues, a tussle between the council and us ensued for the next 2 years due to the drainage and a Feudal Burden.
2004-2006 - An Architect produced drawings and planning permission was sought
December 2005 – We finally exchanged contracts after 2 years of wrangling and uncertainty with belligerent council officers who wouldn’t concede the fact they had calculated the burden incorrectly (£24,000 instead of £8,000).
Nov 2006 – Building work started in the wettest and windiest November for years in which our timber frame nearly blew away!
March 2007 – First Fix
May 2007 - Move in
Sept 2010 – First room is redecorated…

A good architect is a must, keep him reigned in though, prepare for an amount of stress and seemingly pointles hurdles thrown in by the council. Don’t rush into things, take your time. however I would do it all again at the drop of a hat.

The Archtect cost around £5,000 including drawings and the build was 2.5 times the plot price.

Great! Thanks for all that. Your positive-ness will certainly help appease the wife Thumb

I take it you had a design brief in mind or did the architect just throw some ideas at you?

Anything you'd do differently in terms of wiring/entertainment etc?

And as for the re-decorate, anything interesting on the horizon? New 50" LED TV? Wink

RE: House build
Great news that Dunks, wasn't aware you had done a self build.

Elootos - I think I remember the build you mentioned. From memory he also had air con or some sort of heating throughout his house and all controlled in one room. Each room had it's own temperature setting and seemed to have all his network cabling terminating in there also.

From a geeky point of view I would have liked for them to go more into what he acheived by networking his entire house etc.

There could do with a tv series about this. Maybe entitled to "Media House 2010" and find the best ideas out there and share best practice.

No new telly I'm afraid, We have just decorated the office and the large hole where the rack used to be is a small cupboard with the network & speaker switch along with the dread Loftbox. Below the cupboard is a 22u wheeled rack from praudiostash complete with door! We have bought some new shelves and a walnut desk from Dwell, the walls have been wallpapered also. Photos to follow...
