Home Server Wannabee
Greetings

I fortuitously bumped into this forum today while doing Google searches on the relative advantages of WHS and NAS. I was leaning toward WHS when I began this journey some months back. My idea was that WHS was simpler and more straightforward. Apparently RAID has its complexities, etc. The viewpoint here seems to be very oriented to WHS so I won't ask for advice as to which way to go, although I'd love to get some anyway!

No, I wanted to find out about remotely accessing data from the WHS when you are on the road. Are there additional costs invovled? I don't really know how this is set up: whether MS offers a hosting service for users of WHS or if we need to find and pay for our own hosting service after the purchase of WHS. I'd appreciate any information in that regard.

Many thanks and nice to be here. GL

Hello and welcome!

Yeah WHS has had some of us scratching our heads in shear disbelief sometimes, but for those that have persevered it really has turned out worthwhile.

Check out the tips thread for general WHS installs.

And for on the road access, the simplest actual server control would be with Teamviewer. Other than that there are WHS add-ons that will serve the media access purpose. Google for some or have a look in the WHS section here to see if some have Ben mentioned (don't recall any yet).

Or of course Slingbox, but I don't know how that would interact with a server. Maybe a client install instead.

RE: Home Server Wannabee
Thank you elootos. I appreciate the information. I went over to the thread you referenced and posted a query there. I have TeamViewer5 installed, I've used it in the past but I wasn't aware that it would enable an "unmanned" log in to a remote system. I was under the impression that it required passwords to be entered, etc.
