HDMI Over IP
Phase II is about to kick off, but I need to bounce a couple of ideas around.

Been busy buying hardware again...

I now have a Netgear 7224 24port Gigabit switch and a pair of HDMI over IP boxes (a Transmitter and a Reciever).

The purpose of this gear is to be able to do many2many, all devices on any screen, however I am going to trial it and replace the Linksys DMA2100 extender for now.

So, my puzzle is what to do with the HDMI over IP boxes in the longer term to give me many 2 many

Do I connect the transmitter to my AV amp and allow it to do the switching for source on everything (Sky-HD currently goes direct to the screen as the amp doesn't have upscaling - leave that to the TV). This may require an amp upgade as I am short of inputs (only 3 inputs and one output)

or

Connect the TX to each source (like Sky or the media PC for example) then put all the data across the network with no amp - can't be right, surely?. Sky-HD won't do audio on HDMI will it? (I have a Tos-link optical for Dolby Digital to the amp at the moment)

or

Tx at each source but with an HDMI splitter at the devices that require to be connected to a screen directly (like Sky),

or

Am I totally off the mark and have't a clue. Loco

RE: HDMI Over IP
Hmmmm, bit of trial and error testing me thinks!

Not sure exactly how fussy HDMI can be with handshaking and all that malarky as I only have direct runs in my house with no switching or extending. Perhaps others will have a better clue, but I like the idea of running the TX off the amp, cos that assumes a couple of things; one is that the amp outputs a nice decent solid HDMI signal, and two you can still switch the amp's feed remotely should you need to with an IR repeater (£30 wireless one or some such model).

As for SkyHD, no idea if it supports audio (5.1 or the like) over HDMI, but perhaps this would make a good opportunity to justify the upgrade to an amp that can combine separate video/audio inputs over its master HDMI output (don't even know if that's a possibility or one I just made up). Thumb

I suppose it depends on where you have all your sources, under TV or at a node 0 under the stairs etc.

Another thing is how many panels are you trying to display on at the same time?

If you have 4 sources & 4 tvs all in remote locations you could use something like this :-

This is an all in one solution using HDMI over CAT5 rather than HDMI over IP & is limited to 4 or 8 panels by the nature of the setup.

If you want HDMI over IP then this sort of thing here would be better suited. The rack-mount has a HDMI matrix type of function built in, but needs a switch able to deal with multiple VLANs. You can then add extenders as you wish so in a way future proofing more panels being added in the future. I would love to have this kind of setup even if it is overkill, this is the sort of thing installers use in airport lounges & can be cascaded using different switch combinations to extend the amount of tvs capable of displaying your Sky HDThumbsup

I hope this makes sense.

Most of the kit is in a unit under the TV except for the media PC (it is in a office/cupborad just off the lounge)

At the moment 3, plus 2 pcs & a laptop

Yep, this is what have bought, it's the one in one out HDMI that is getting me puzzled. I have some doubts over the audio, especially as I know these unit are purely for HDMI to IP and can handle DD 5.1 but not HD audio, which in real terns is fine for the other two screens (and PCs) but for the lounge playing blue rays from the media PC it has to be TrueHD as the amp is fed directly from the PC...
I'll query dunks... I seem to remember him saying something about streaming from the PC with TrueHD lighting up on his amp...Smile

Cheers for your advice tho'Wave

I hope this makes sense.
