Acer Revo
I`ve been thinking about one of the Acer net tops as I`m sick to death of the noise a 360 makes. Even hidden in a cupboard late at night the 360 imakes to much noise at low volume. Or being able to use the extra outputs on the GFX card to another screen via extended HDMI or Baluns, but this never seems to be very stable due to hdcp handshake problems.
Update been having a play with my AcerOne netbook as an extender this evening (also running W7). Faster than a 360, a lot less noise. mmmm more toys to buy........... Will I ever have enough money to move out? |

RE: best media centre extender?
Sod it got an Acer Aspire Revo R3610 on order, will report results when it gets here.
Going to run the native preinstalled 7 as part of the homegroup rather than going with XBMC etc as I want the same interface. |

RE: best media centre extender?
I've got a R3600. I'm half way through installing win 7 and media centre. The only problem I have had is that I carn't use the hdmi to my samsung 19" screen. Having to use the vga instead.

Well its here and it runs like a bag `o crap! The ammount of tosh installed on this thing is amazing. It takes the best part of two minutes to boot up and being useable!
Just in the process of uninstalling. Andy mines conected to the DVI port at present and working fine (but bloody slow) |

RE: best media centre extender?
Hi huxley.
I'm curious how its going. Where did you end up buying it from? Whats the noise like, is there bios fan support and do the temps look resonable? oooo so many questions need info.

RE: best media centre extender?
Well got rid of all the installed junk and made a back up.
The fan in bios is running at 2518rpm after being on half the night. CPU Temp is 61c / 140f System temp is 55c / 131f Seems a bit warm to me, the side of the case where the harddrive is very warm. I have a spare Vertex 30 gig SSD so I think I may pop that in at some point tomorrow. Right gonna watch Zombieland and run the connection to the homegroup tomorrow |

RE: best media centre extender?
Well did a fresh install of 7 to an OCZ vertex. System boots from off in about 20 seconds after a few tweeks.
The CPU temp sits around 56c with the fan running around 2200rpm. The case feels a lot cooler. Just came across a tube of arctic silver whilst I was putting some tools away..... next time maybe. I set up the system via and hdmi output connected to the dvi port on my 22" syncmaster screen. Picture is spot on. I`ve just tested the hdmi port on the tv and the picture is awfull despite messing with the settings. Gonna stick with DVI as the screen only has one HDMI in. Plugged in my old Cyberlink remote reciever which it found drivers for, just need to tweeks the buttons via my Harmony One. Added it to the home group all media plays fine. One thing left to do is find a place for it. I may bolt the vesa clamp to the wall under the bed as the screen is attached to a mount already. Will try and post some pics later. (zombieland is funny as f**k btw) update just to confirm Trim is working on the OCZ SSD To check just run this CMD Command prompt > fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled) DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled) |

RE: best media centre extender?
Great read btw!
![]() The Acer 3600 looks fab, just googled it and I see it's designed to be VESA mounted on the back of a TV anyway, which is a great idea. Keep up with the updates! elootos - mediacenterhouse.com This forum has no strict rules, just those I make up as I go along! |
